South of the city, the District of Leipzig is home to about 270,000 persons. The seat of the local public administration is located at Borna. The district originated from the merger of the former districts of Leipzig County and Muldental.

The district is split into three different spatial environments:

The area on the Southern fringe of Leipzig used to be dominated by open-cast lignite mining. Extensive landscape conversion leads to a new and attractive area to life and work. Today, it is the centre of Saxony’s chemical industry. www.leipziger-neuseenland.de

The heart of the Mulde river valley is located in between the cities of Grimma and Wurzen. Manufactoring businesses and health industries are located in the picturesque landscape.
